CocoRosie "Grey Oceans" SubPop, 2010 With Grey Oceans, CocoRosie's fourth full-length LP and their first for the SubPop label, sisters Bianca "Coco" and Sierra "Rosie" Casady ease up on the crackling, weird energy of earlier efforts and opt for a sprawling, sparse noisescape. Songs like "Trinity's Crying" and "Undertaker" never manage to come together, despite individually intriguing components. "Smokey Taboo" goes halfheartedly after MIA, and "Hopscotch" is singularly grating with its babydoll-stuck-in-a-washing-machine theme. The sisters have never been known to make music to please anyone but themselves; however, there's a feeling of ennui pervading the proceedings, as if they started off ambitiously but tired before seeing these efforts through to completion. The album makes an attempt to gather itself for the strangely moving "R.I.P. Burn Face" and reaches a small zenith in "Lemonade." Dropping piano notes and thrumming beats mingle with snatches of operatic voice, appearing like cinematic parcels of blue sky. If only that were enough to make up for the impenetrable fog.
