Cogwheel Dogs "Cress" self-released, 2008 This one's a grower for sure. At first, the rasping cello dominating the uneven mix would seem to suggest amateurism, and the husky female vocal initially brings back bad memories of the Dresden Dolls, but fear not - that amateurism is actually primitivism of the most beautiful sort, and it's hard to imagine any other voice than Rebecca Mosley's impassioned and acrobatic intonation. The song "Cress" is the song that's been getting these folks all kinds of attention in the UK, and it's everything a good post punk single should be: tense, inventive, dynamic, and over before three minutes. It also introduces the most interesting element of Cogwheel Dogs' sound: the cello. On the title track, it dances around contrapuntally to Mosley's vocal to make the most instantly recognizable hook of the three tracks here, but it's the second song, "Anticoagulant," that really shows off this band's strengths. Feverishly strummed acoustic guitars, brushed tom banging, and beautifully distorted cello sweep across abrupt key changes and dynamic shifts, and the effect is pretty dazzling - try listening to it just once. If the rest of their material is anywhere near as good as what's presented on this single (which, as their MySpace page surely attests, certainly is), Cogwheel Dogs are set to become one of the most exciting bands to come out of the underground in years.
